GB. WALES. Aberfan. The Aberfan disaster was a catastrophic collapse of a colliery spoil in the Welsh village of Aberfan, on 21st October 1966, killing 116 children and 28 adults. GB. WALES. Neath Valley, Black Mountain Coal. Pit ponies each have an individual handler who is responsible for its health, welfare and cleanliness. Ponies are not underground for long periods. Simply the time it takes to get to the coal face and bring coal out to the surface. A distance of about a mile. Between shifts the miners gather in their own rest-room. 1993
