New sculpture is a name applied to the sculptures produced by a group of artists working in the second half of the nineteenth century The term was coined by critic Edmund Gosse in an 1876 article in Art Journal titled The New Sculpture in which he identified this new trend in sculpture. Its distinguishing qualities were a new dynamism and energy as well as physical realism, mythological or exotic subject matter and use of symbolism, as opposed to prevailing style of frozen neoclassicism. It can be considered part of symbolism. The keynote work was seen by Gosse as Lord Fredrick Leighton’s Athlete Wrestling with a Python, but the key artist was Sir Alfred Gilbert followed by Sir George Frampton. An Important precursor was Michelangelesque work of Alfred Stevens.

<p>Information provided by the estate of Moody: 'The artist's first self-portrait in bronze so displeased him, that he destroyed it. This second version pleased him no better. By the time he finished it in June 1937, he was utterly dedicated to wood and had virtually abandoned bronze. He therefore decided to try another version in elm and, within a month, produced Self-Portrait 3. For the next nine years, all his portraits were in wood.</p> <p>When Marie Seton went to live in America, she put this mask into storage, together with several other works the artist had left in her care. Although it is mentioned in her letter of 27.10.42 to Cox &amp; King's, authorising Helene Moody to collect them, it remained with Marie Seton until her death in 1985 and was restored to the artist's collection by her executor Pamela Cullen in 1989.'</p>

<p>Penddelw prin yw hwn gan y cerflunydd o Gymru William Goscombe John. Roedd Bokani yn un o chwe pygmi o'r Congo a gludwyd i Ewrop ym 1905. Roedd y grŵp yn destun chwilfrydedd mawr pan gawsant eu dangos i'r cyhoedd mewn neuaddau gorlawn mewn trefi a dinasoedd ledeld y DU, gan gynnwys Cymru. Er eu bod yn ymddangos yn bennaf mewn newuaddau cyngerdd, cawsant eu dangos hefyd ym Mhalas Buckingham, a hyd yn oed mewn sŵ. Mae penddelw Bokani a gweithiau eraill wedi bod yn rhan o ymyriad gan broject Treftadaeth Ifanc Tynnu'r Llwch. Wedi cyfres o weithdai, roedd y cyfrannwyr yn teimlo bod y bobl yn y gweithiau yma, fel Bokani, yn cael eu gweld fel gwrthrychau oedd yn yn cael sylw oherwydd eu cyswllt â'r Ymerodraeth, trefedigaethu neu William Goscombe John yn unig. <p>Information provided by the estate of Ronald Moody:</p> <p>'By the time he finished Self-Portrait 2 in June 1937, the artist was utterly dedicated to wood and had virtually abandoned bronze. He therefore decided to try another version and, within a month, produced this mask in elm. The difference between the two versions is remarkable, even though they are almost identical in concept. The earlier, though life-size, gives the impression of being much smaller, and the smooth stylisation of the material seems to add impassivity and sombreness to the whole. The second is more expansive, both in size and feeling, and the grain of the wood subtly underlines the contour of the face, giving it animation and character. Greatly encouraged by this, Moody eagerly turned to wood for future portraits and for the next nine years used nothing else. </p> <p>On 4.1.39, it was shipped from Paris to the Harmon Foundation in New York, for inclusion in exhibitions in America, where it was shownas A Mask. It remained in the Foundation's custody throughout the war and for some time afterwards.</p> <p>On 2.3.49, the artist wrote to Marie Seton listing the works he wished her to bring back to England. Amongst these was: "Another mask, wood, based on my head (about life size)".'</p>

Ganed McBean yn Nhrecelyn, Gwent. Bu’n gweithio fel gwneuthurwr masgiau theatrig a dylunydd setiau cyn troi at ffotograffiaeth. Llwyddodd dull hudolus a dyfeisgar McBean o lunio portreadau i’w wneud yn boblogaidd gyda’r enwogion niferus a fu’n eistedd iddo. Ym 1942, cafodd McBean ei arestio am fod yn hoyw, oedd yn dal i fod yn anghyfreithlon ar y pryd, a’i ddedfrydu i lafur caled. Ar ôl cael ei ryddhau ym 1944, ailgydiodd yn ei yrfa yn y pen draw a chafodd lwyddiant mawr. Mae ei bortreadau o Audrey Hepburn a’r Beatles, ymhlith eraill, bellach yn ddelweddau eiconig.</p>
