George, McCULLOCH
George McCulloch owned the greatest single private collection of Victorian and Edwardian paintings ever formed. Made his fortune from sheep farming in Australia. At the posthumous sale of his work in 1913, many of his greatest acquisitions were bought by Lord Leverhulme, which led to the foundation of tyhe Lady Lever Gallery, Port Sunlight. Examples of his collection are Millais's 'Sir Isumbras at the Ford', Leighton's 'Daphnephoria'; and the John Singer Sargent's 'On his holidays, Norway' in the LLG was modelled by Alex McCulloch, George McCulloch's son.

Lived in Wales: 5 years.</p> <p>Joanna Howells works from her pottery in Tythegston, on the South Wales coast, creating beautiful ceramics. After reading Medicine at Cambridge, she went to the Sir John Cass School of Art London, then took a ceramics course at Harrow Art College, rekindling her youthful interest in the art form. Her work focuses on form and texture, and is influenced by the rugged and windswept coastline on which she lives. Joanna was born in Rugby and moved to south Wales five years ago.</p>

<p>Margaret Greville Foster (later Droescher), a.k.a. Greville Texidor was Augustus John's secretary as early as December 1921, when she was nineteen, and was sitting for him by 1922. This is believed to be a portrait of her in her early twenties.</p>
