Label from '[un]seen [un]heard]' display intervention 2020: "This bust is a portrait of Paul Robeson an African American athlete, performing artist and activist created by Jamaican-born fellow Black artist Ronald Moody. During his time spent in Britain, Robeson developed a deep bond with the labour movement and was particularly supportive of the miners of Wales."

This portrait was commissiond by the DDR Akademie der Kunst, Berlin, but political mayhem forced them to renege. Despite this and Robeson's unpredictability as a sitter, it was ready in time for the SPS 'Human Rights' exhibition.

This dramatic head was the last of five portraits in this medium, which are essays in the juxtaposition of textural effects and patins. In each, the skin has the nubbly surface, developed during the artist's experimentation with concrete, but in these works it is more varied and much finer and contrasts subtly with other textures he achieves. Here honeycomb texture of the hair compliments the heavier texture of the skin, infusing the whole with immense tactility.

Full title: Jean Straker, Photographer. Jean Straker was born in London in 1913. During the Second World War, Straker, a conscientious objector, worked as a photographer. Jean soon discovered how great the need was for detailed, speedy medical photography, particularly of surgical procedures. There were numerous emergency operations performed during the air raid years and operating techniques were changing and developing rapidly. Photographs, particularly those in sequence, were of the utmost value, as records and in the teaching hospitals as teaching aids. Abandoning commercial photography in 1951 Jean set up The "Academy of Visual Arts". Members had access to exhibitions resulting from its program of lecture-demonstrations. In 1951, he opened the Visual Arts Club at Studio House, 12 Soho Square, for "artists and photographers, amateur and professional, studying the female nude". Six years in 1961, officers from Scotland Yard, acting on a tip of from the Italian Police, visited Straker. In 1961, police raided Studio House and took a number of prints and negatives that they considered obscene. Straker stood trial in 1962, he defended himself and despite arguing that his photographs were "of artistic value", he lost the case and forfeited all the prints and negatives that were confiscated. But on appeal to The House of Lords this conviction was squashed. This case lead to changes in the Censorship Laws in 1965.

Roedd y Fonesig Eleanor Butler a Sarah Ponsonby yn fenywod o dras bonheddig Eingl-Wyddelig, wnaeth oresgyn gwrthwynebiad gan eu teuluoedd a sgandal cymdeithasol gan redeg i ffwrdd gyda’i gilydd. Daethant i Blas Newydd, Llangollen, ym 1779 a buon nhw’n byw yno am dros hanner canrif. Roedden nhw’n gwisgo dillad gwrywaidd, yn llofnodi gohebiaeth ar y cyd ac yn gwrthod treulio un noson oddi cartref. Daeth eu ffyddlondeb i’w gilydd a’u ffordd ddelfrydol o fyw yn rhan o chwedloniaeth gyfoes. Roedd llawer o enwogion yn ymweld â nhw, gan gynnwys Dug Wellington, William Wordsworth a Walter Scott. Nid yw’n hysbys pryd y gwnaeth yr artist amatur, y Fonesig Leighton, y paentiad y mae’r lithograff hwn yn seiliedig arno. Yn ôl y sôn, doedd yr un o’r ddwy foneddiges yn fodlon eistedd i gael portread, ond roedd y ddwy am i’r llall wneud hynny.
