JOYCE, Paul
Joyce had a successful career as a photographer in the 1970's, when over fifty of his portrait photographs were acquired by the National Portrait Gallery, and examples of his landscape work were acquired by the Government Art Collection. He subsequently became a documentary film maker and painter and is best known as the author of two books based on conversations with David Hockney. Between 1976 and 1979 he made several visits to Wales, resulting in a cycle of black and white prints that formed the exhibition 'Edge to Edge - Photographs of the Welsh Landscape' which was toured by the then Arts Council Wales and accompanied by a catalogue of the same name.

<p>Full title: Jean Straker, Photographer. Jean Straker was born in London in 1913. During the Second World War, Straker, a conscientious objector, worked as a photographer. Jean soon discovered how great the need was for detailed, speedy medical photography, particularly of surgical procedures. There were numerous emergency operations performed during the air raid years and operating techniques were changing and developing rapidly. Photographs, particularly those in sequence, were of the utmost value, as records and in the teaching hospitals as teaching aids. Abandoning commercial photography in 1951 Jean set up The "Academy of Visual Arts". Members had access to exhibitions resulting from its program of lecture-demonstrations. In 1951, he opened the Visual Arts Club at Studio House, 12 Soho Square, for "artists and photographers, amateur and professional, studying the female nude". Six years in 1961, officers from Scotland Yard, acting on a tip of from the Italian Police, visited Straker. In 1961, police raided Studio House and took a number of prints and negatives that they considered obscene. Straker stood trial in 1962, he defended himself and despite arguing that his photographs were "of artistic value", he lost the case and forfeited all the prints and negatives that were confiscated. But on appeal to The House of Lords this conviction was squashed. This case lead to changes in the Censorship Laws in 1965.</p>

<p>Ganed yr awdur Sarah Waters yn Neyland, Sir Benfro. Gwnaeth enw iddi hi ei hun gyda'i nofelau clodwiw, Tipping the Velvet (1998), Affinity (1999) a Fingersmith (2002), sy'n portreadu bywyd ac antur lesbiaid yn Oes Fictoria. Dylanwadir ar ei nofelau gan ei thraethawd doethuriaeth ar ffuglen hanesyddol lesbiaidd a hoyw. Mae Waters wedi ennill llu o anrhydeddau, gan gynnwys Awdur y Flwyddyn yng Ngwobrau Llyfrau Prydain 2003. Mae wedi cyrraedd rhestr fer Gwobr Man Booker dair gwaith, ac fe'i hetholwyd yn Gymrawd o'r Gymdeithas Lenyddiaeth Frenhinol yn 2009. Ganed Ric Bower yn Llundain ac mae bellach yn byw ac yn gweithio yng ngorllewin Cymru. Astudiodd Celf Gain ym Manceinion, ac yn 2005 enillodd radd anrhydedd dosbarth cyntaf mewn Ffotograffiaeth o Goleg Sir Gâr. Ymhlith ei arddangosfeydd blaenorol mae sioe unigol yn 2001 yn Oriel Emrys yn Hwlffordd. Yn baentiwr portreadau sefydledig, yn fwy diweddar mae wedi bod yn ymwneud ag arfer ffotograffig, a chyrhaeddodd rownd derfynol Gwobr Portreadau Ffotograffig Schweppes 2005. Mae proses ffotograffig Bower wedi’i dylanwadu’n helaeth gan baentiadau hanesyddol, gan ddefnyddio lliw cyfoethog a symbolaeth i greu amgylchedd llawn gwefr, fel sydd i’w weld yn ei bortread o Sarah Waters.</p>
