Circular plate, pearlware, flat base. Inner rim border of a band of light-brown enamel circles, interspersed with small dark brown leaf sprigs. Centre painted with a botanical illustration of the 'Mountain Primula' (identified as Primulia on reverse): brown roots, green leaves, purple flowers with yellow centres. Plate broken and repaired, rim chipped.

Cambrian Pottery
Established in Swansea in 1764, the Cambrian Pottery reached its creative peak under the proprietorship of Lewis Weston Dillwyn (1778-1855), who ran the Pottery (with a break between 1817 and 1824) from 1802 to 1836. Lewis Weston Dillwyn was a natural scientist, antiquarian, Member of Parliament, magistrate and landowner whose intellectual interests drove the Cambrian Pottery to become one of the most ambitious and artistically accomplished British potteries of the early 19th century. While the porcelain manufactured in Swansea between 1814 and 1825 justifies its reputation as among the finest of British porcelains, the pottery produced under Dillwyn’s ownership between 1802 and about 1809 was at its best an equally impressive achievement, most particularly that made for sale in the Pottery’s Cambrian Warehouse in London 1806-1808, the context for which this supper service was most likely created.

<p>Sculptural form, glazed porcelain, composed of a large, anatomically correct heart cast from that of a cow, with a complex arrangement of branches rising from the aorta and superior vena cava, symbolising veins, arteries and flames, standing on four short, spiny legs; the entire form is covered in vibrant, flowing glaze, primarily in reds, oranges and yellow on the heart and legs, with areas of white paper porcelain, the branches are primarily yellow.</p>

<p>Monumental vase, hard-paste porcelain with clear glaze, thrown in four (possibly five) sections and assembled, flat base and barrel-shaped body with a wide, rounded shoulder and short, gently flaring neck; decorated in densely patterned overglaze fencai enamels with three focal motifs of Chinese vases evenly spaced around the body, between these there are unevenly scattered individual and overlapping circles of enamel, infilled with a range of different patterns.</p>
