Lurcat yn wreiddiol o Bruyéres yn y Vosges, a daeth i Baris ym 1900. Fel arlunydd ifanc daeth dan ddylanwad Cezanne a Mynegianwyr yr Almaen. Wedyn daeth yn gyfeillgar â Picasso ac Apollinaire. Ar ôl ymweld â Sbaen ym 1924, cynhyrchodd Lurcat dirluniau telynegol gyda naws Swrealaidd, fel y gwaith hwn. Yn ystod ail ran ei yrfa, arbenigai mewn dylunio tapestrïau.
