Tra’r oedd yn Ysgol Gelf Slade yn Llundain, byddai Gwen John wedi astudio cerflunwaith yn yr Ystafell Hynafolion. Ym Mharis, parhaodd ei diddordeb mewn cerflunio ar ôl iddi gwrdd â’r artist Auguste Rodin. Astudiaeth yw hon o farmor hynafol yn Amgueddfa'r Louvre ym Mharis. Seiliodd Rodin ffigwr yn un o’i gerfluniau ar yr un gwaith.
