Dame Margaret Price CBE. Place and date of birth: Blackwood 1941. Main Occupation: Opera Singer - Lyric Soprano. First Language: Welsh. Other languages: English, German, French, Italian. Lived in Wales: Always except for working.

Photo shoot: Home, Moylgrove, 30th September 2002

Opera Singer, Dame Margaret Price has arguably one of the most beautiful lyric soprano voices to come out of Britain in the last fifty years. Born in Blackwood her first ambition was to become a biology teacher, but a scholarship to Trinity Music College left to her professional debut at Welsh National Opera in 1962 as Cherubino in Mozart’s The Marriage of Figaro. She rapidly became a star of the operatic world, celebrated for the purity and tonal beauty of her voice, as well as her flawless technique. She was awarded a CBE in 1982, followed by the DBE in 1993.

Photo shot: Home, Pencader, 18th June 2002. Place and date of birth: London 1961. Main occupation: Musician. First Language: English. Other languages: Welsh. Lived in Wales: Over 20 years.

The musician credited with single-handedly re-invigorating the Welsh folk music scene. Born in north London, she studied art and moved to Wales and learned Welsh. It was this move to Wales twenty years ago that sparked her interest in traditional music. She lives in Pencader and tours Wales with her band Fernhill, formed in 1994 with her husband Ceri Rhys Matthews, playing intimate concerts using few instruments, the most important of which is her remarkable voice. Her services as a singer have been sought by the the likes of Robert Plant and John Cale.
